You don’t need to buy anything to read the Quran: the full Arabic text, translations and recitations are freely available online. What matters is choosing a source that reproduces the text accurately. Here is where to look and what to check.

Reading online

  • Quran.com — the Arabic text with many translations, word-by-word display, tafsir and audio from many reciters. Also available as a mobile app.
  • Tanzil.net — a project that publishes a carefully verified Unicode Quran text, used as a source by many other websites and apps, along with a large collection of translations.
  • QuranEnc.com (The Noble Qur’an Encyclopedia) — reviewed translations of the meanings in dozens of languages. The Arabic text used on this site comes from its Uthmani text.
  • This site — the Arabic text of every surah, with ayah numbers, on the surah pages.

Downloading a Quran PDF

The safest source for a printable Arabic mushaf is the publisher itself. The King Fahd Glorious Quran Printing Complex in Medina, which prints the widely used Madinah mushaf, publishes its editions online. Large Quran websites also offer PDF downloads of their editions. Be careful with PDFs passed around on file-sharing sites: you can’t easily tell where they came from or whether pages are missing.

How to check a digital Quran copy

  • Know the source. A trustworthy site names the text it uses (for example the Madinah mushaf or the Tanzil text) and the translation and translator.
  • Check the numbering. The standard count has 114 surahs and 6,236 ayahs.
  • Look at the marks. Missing or misplaced vowel marks, letters that don’t join, or wrongly ordered numbers usually mean the text was copied through software that doesn’t handle Arabic properly.
  • Avoid retyped text. Text copied from images or retyped by hand is the most common source of errors.

Different scripts and layouts

Two script styles are common: the Uthmani script of the Madinah mushaf, used across the Arab world, and the Indo-Pak script common in South Asia, which marks vowels a little differently and is often printed in 13- or 16-line layouts. The words are the same; choose the style you learned to read with. See how long the Quran is for more on page layouts.

Reading on your phone

Quran apps let you bookmark where you stopped, follow audio verse by verse and read offline. Choose one from a known publisher, and keep a printed mushaf too if you can — many people find they concentrate better on paper.

If you want to share a passage you have been reading, you can turn it into a short video with the verified Arabic text.
