The length of the Quran can be measured in several ways — pages, words, parts or hours of recitation. Here is what each measure means and why the numbers you find online differ.

How many pages is the Quran?

The most widely printed Arabic copy, the Madinah mushaf from the King Fahd Complex, has 604 pages. It is a 15-line copy: every page has 15 lines, and almost every juz (part) is exactly 20 pages, which makes it easy to keep track of daily reading. Many people simply say “a page a day” or “four pages after each prayer” using this layout.

The page count of other copies depends on the layout, the script style and the size of the print. Copies with extra commentary, a translation beside the Arabic or large print have many more pages.

What are 13-line, 15-line and 16-line Qurans?

The “line” number tells you how many lines of text each page has. In South Asia, copies printed in the Indo-Pak script are common in 13-line and 16-line layouts, while the 15-line layout follows the Madinah page arrangement. Huffaz (people who memorise the Quran) usually stay with one layout for life, because they remember where each verse sits on the page. The words are the same in all of them.

How many words?

A simple count of the Uthmani text used on this site gives 77,429 words, in 6,236 ayahs and 114 surahs. For comparison, that is the length of a short novel — but Arabic packs a lot into a word, since pronouns and prepositions are often attached to it, so an English translation is considerably longer.

What is a juz (para)?

The Quran is divided into 30 juz (called para or sipara in South Asia) of about equal length. The divisions don’t follow surah boundaries: a juz can start in the middle of a surah. The 30th juz, often called Juz Amma, contains the short surahs at the end of the Quran, from Surah An-Naba (78) to Surah An-Nas (114), which many people memorise first.

How long does it take to read the Quran?

  • One juz a day completes the Quran in 30 days — the most common plan in Ramadan. Reading one juz takes many people roughly 30–60 minutes in Arabic.
  • Four to five pages after each of the five prayers (about 20 pages a day) also completes it in about a month.
  • Listening: complete recordings of the whole Quran run well over ten hours at a steady pace and much longer in the slow, melodic mujawwad style.

Reading in English

An English translation is a book of several hundred pages; with commentary it can run to more than a thousand. If you are reading in English for the first time, see how to choose an English translation.
