An ayah (plural ayat) is a verse of the Quran. Every surah is made of ayahs, from 3 in the shortest surahs to 286 in Surah Al-Baqarah (2). In the standard count there are 6,236 ayahs in all.

What does the word mean?

In Arabic, ayah means a sign, an indication or a miracle. The Quran uses the word in all these senses: for its own verses, for the miracles given to prophets, and for the signs of God in nature — the alternation of night and day, the rain, the variety of languages and colours. Calling each verse an “ayah” reflects the belief that every verse is itself a sign.

How ayahs are marked

In printed copies the end of each ayah is marked with a small ornament, usually a circle or rosette containing the verse number. On this site the same ornament appears at the end of each verse, for example at the end of 112:1. Small pause marks above the line tell the reciter where to stop or continue within and between verses.

How verses are numbered — and why totals differ

Numbering starts again at 1 in every surah. Where one verse ends and the next begins was transmitted orally by the early reciters, and several cities preserved slightly different traditions. The words are the same; only the divisions differ. The Kufan tradition, used with the Hafs recitation in most of the world, gives 6,236. Read more in how many verses are in the Quran.

How to cite an ayah

  • Numbers: surah number, colon, ayah number — 2:255. A range uses a dash: 96:1–5.
  • Name and numbers: “Al-Baqarah 2:255” is clearer for readers who don’t know surah numbers.
  • Some older books write 2.255 or II:255; the meaning is the same.

Ayahs with their own names

A few verses are so well known that they have names. Ayat al-Kursi, “the Verse of the Throne”, is 2:255; it describes God’s knowledge and power and is widely memorised and recited for protection. Ayat an-Nur, “the Verse of Light”, is 24:35. The longest verse, 2:282, is known as the verse of debt.

Short and long ayahs

Some ayahs are a single word; others run to more than a hundred words. Meccan surahs tend to have short, rhythmic verses that end in matching sounds, while Medinan verses are often longer. The rhythm of the verse endings is one reason the Quran is so memorable when recited.
