About Surah An-Nas

An-Nas, “Mankind”, is the last surah of the Quran. It seeks refuge in God as Lord, King and God of mankind from the whisperer who withdraws — the one who whispers into people’s hearts, from among jinn and people.

Where Al-Falaq seeks protection from outward harms, An-Nas focuses on the inner danger of whispering that leads people astray. The three descriptions of God — Lord, King, God — are repeated with “of mankind”, which commentators see as a complete surrender of the human being to God’s care.

With Al-Falaq and Al-Ikhlas, it is recited after prayers, in the morning and evening, and before sleep. It is often the first surah children learn, and memorisation of the Quran frequently starts here and moves backwards through the last surahs.
