Surah Al-Mulk (67) is a Meccan surah of 30 ayahs and the first surah of the 29th juz, which is often called “Tabarak” after its opening word. Its name means sovereignty or dominion. It is short enough to memorise and is recited by many Muslims every night.

Life and death as a test

The surah opens by glorifying God, in whose hand is all sovereignty, who created death and life to test which of people is best in deeds (67:1–2). Scholars note the phrase “best in deeds”, not “most in deeds”: what matters is the quality and sincerity of what one does.

Look at creation — and look again

The next verses invite the reader to look at the seven heavens and find any flaw, then look again and again — the eye will return tired, having found none (67:3–4). The night sky, adorned with lamps, is presented as a sign of God’s perfect creation.

A warning and a regret

The surah describes those who rejected the warnings and how they will admit that, had they listened or reasoned, they would not be among the people of the Fire (67:10). It is a call to use one’s hearing and reason.

Signs in everyday life

Al-Mulk points to ordinary things as signs: the earth made easy to walk on, birds held in the air with wings spread and folded, and water that people depend on (67:15, 67:19, 67:30). The closing verse asks who would bring flowing water if it sank into the earth.

Reciting Al-Mulk at night

Hadith report that the Prophet would not sleep until he had recited Al-Mulk, and that a surah of the Quran of thirty verses interceded for a man until he was forgiven — understood as Al-Mulk. Scholars also mention it as a protection in the grave. On the basis of these reports, many Muslims recite it every night before sleeping.

Memorising it

With 30 ayahs, Al-Mulk can be memorised in a few weeks at two or three verses a day. See how to memorise the Quran for a method. Read the Arabic on the Surah Al-Mulk (67) page, or make a video of Surah Al-Mulk.
