Surah Ya-Sin (36) (often written Yasin) is a Meccan surah of 83 ayahs. It takes its name from its opening letters, Ya and Sin — two of the “disconnected letters” whose meaning is not explained in the Quran. It is one of the most frequently recited surahs, read in many homes and mosques, often on Thursday nights and for the sick and the dying.
Main themes
1. The message and the messenger
The surah opens by affirming that the Prophet is one of the messengers, on a straight path, sent with a revelation from the Almighty, the Merciful, to warn a people whose forefathers had not been warned (36:1–12).
2. The story of the town
The longest story in the surah describes messengers sent to a town. The people reject them, and a man comes running from the far side of the town to urge his people to follow the messengers (36:13–29). He is killed for his belief, and is told to enter Paradise, wishing that his people knew how God had honoured him. His words are often quoted as a model of sincere advice.
3. Signs in creation
A series of verses points to signs of God in nature: dead land brought to life with crops and gardens, night and day, the sun running on its course, the moon’s phases, and ships carrying people across the sea (36:33–44).
4. Resurrection and judgement
The second half describes the Day of Resurrection: the blowing of the trumpet, people rising from their graves, the reward of the people of Paradise and the testimony of hands and feet. The surah closes by answering those who doubt resurrection: the One who created the human being from a drop can bring the bones back to life, and when He wills something, He says “Be” and it is (36:77–83).
“The heart of the Quran”
A frequently quoted hadith describes Yasin as the heart of the Quran. Many hadith scholars consider this report weak, and the same is said of several other narrations about its specific rewards. Scholars generally agree that it is good to recite Yasin like any part of the Quran, and many recommend reciting it near the dying, based on other reports. Muslims who want to know the exact grading of a narration should ask a scholar of hadith.
Reading Yasin
Yasin takes most people about fifteen to twenty minutes to recite at a steady pace. The Arabic text is on the Surah Ya-Sin (36) page, and you can follow along with a recitation — see where to listen to recitations.
