About Surah Al-Ikhlas
Al-Ikhlas, “Sincerity” or “Purity of Faith”, is a four-verse statement of God’s oneness: He is One, the Eternal Refuge, He neither begets nor was begotten, and nothing is comparable to Him. It is among the first surahs Muslims memorise.
Why it matters
The surah is a concise summary of tawhid, the belief in one God. Classical reports say it was revealed when people asked the Prophet to describe his Lord. Its name refers to sincerity of faith, free from associating anything with God.
“A third of the Quran”
A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari describes Al-Ikhlas as equal to a third of the Quran. Scholars commonly explain that the Quran’s content covers belief in God, stories and laws, and this surah sums up the first. Another report tells of a companion who recited it in every prayer because he loved it, and the Prophet said his love for it would admit him to Paradise.
When it is recited
- In prayer, often after Al-Fatihah.
- With Al-Falaq and An-Nas in the morning and evening, and before sleep, following the Prophet’s practice reported in Sahih al-Bukhari.
