About Surah Al-'Ankabut

Al-’Ankabut, “The Spider”, is a Meccan surah that speaks directly to believers under pressure. It opens by asking whether people expect to say “we believe” and not be tested, recalls prophets who endured long hardship, and compares reliance on anything other than God to the flimsiest shelter there is — a spider’s house. Its final verse promises guidance to all who strive for God’s sake.

Main themes

  • Faith will be tested (29:2–3): communities before were tried, so that God makes evident who is truthful and who is lying.
  • Parents and faith (29:8): children are commanded to treat their parents well, but not to obey them in associating partners with God.
  • Prophets who persevered: Noah lived among his people a thousand years less fifty (29:14); Abraham, Lot and Shu’ayb follow, then a summary of how ’Ad, Thamud, Qarun, Pharaoh and Haman were each seized for their sins (29:40).

The spider’s house

29:41 likens those who take protectors other than God to a spider that builds itself a house, and the frailest of houses is the spider’s. The surah adds that such parables are understood only by those who have knowledge (29:43).

Prayer, dialogue and trust

Prayer is described as restraining a person from shameful and wrong deeds (29:45), and believers are told to discuss with the People of the Book only in the best manner (29:46). Those who cannot practise their faith are reminded that God’s earth is wide (29:56), and many creatures carry no provision yet God provides for them (29:60). The life of this world is called play and distraction, while the Hereafter is true life (29:64). The last verse promises that those who strive in God’s cause will be guided to His ways (29:69).

The surah is generally classed as Meccan, as in the dataset here, though some scholars considered a few of its verses — such as those mentioning hypocrites near the start — to be Medinan.

29:43And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge

29:44Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers

29:45Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do

29:46And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, "We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him

29:47And thus We have sent down to you the Qur'an. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of Makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers

29:48And you did not recite before it any scripture, nor did you inscribe one with your right hand. Otherwise the falsifiers would have had [cause for] doubt

29:49Rather, the Qur'an is distinct verses [preserved] within the breasts of those who have been given knowledge. And none reject Our verses except the wrongdoers

29:50But they say, "Why are not signs sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "The signs are only with Allah, and I am only a clear warner

29:51And is it not sufficient for them that We revealed to you the Book which is recited to them? Indeed in that is a mercy and reminder for a people who believe

29:52Say, "Sufficient is Allah between me and you as Witness. He knows what is in the heavens and earth. And they who have believed in falsehood and disbelieved in Allah - it is those who are the losers

29:53And they urge you to hasten the punishment. And if not for [the decree of] a specified term, punishment would have reached them. But it will surely come to them suddenly while they perceive not

29:54They urge you to hasten the punishment. And indeed, Hell will be encompassing of the disbelievers

29:55On the Day the punishment will cover them from above them and from below their feet and it is said, "Taste [the result of] what you used to do

29:56O My servants who have believed, indeed My earth is spacious, so worship only Me

29:57Every soul will taste death. Then to Us will you be returned

29:58And those who have believed and done righteous deeds - We will surely assign to them of Paradise [elevated] chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers

29:59Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely

29:60And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allah provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing

29:61If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allah." Then how are they deluded

29:62Allah extends provision for whom He wills of His servants and restricts for him. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing

29:63And if you asked them, "Who sends down rain from the sky and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness?" they would surely say " Allah." Say, "Praise to Allah "; but most of them do not reason

29:64And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew

29:65And when they board a ship, they supplicate Allah, sincere to Him in religion. But when He delivers them to the land, at once they associate others with Him

29:66So that they will deny what We have granted them, and they will enjoy themselves. But they are going to know

29:67Have they not seen that We made [Makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve

29:68And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or denies the truth when it has come to him? Is there not in Hell a [sufficient] residence for the disbelievers

29:69And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good
