About Surah Al-Fajr

Al-Fajr, “The Dawn”, opens with oaths by the dawn, ten nights, the even and the odd, and the passing night. It recalls three powerful civilisations brought low — ’Ad, Thamud and Pharaoh — then corrects a common human mistake about wealth and hardship. It ends with one of the Quran’s most beloved passages, addressed to the soul at peace (an-nafs al-mutma’innah).

Flow of the surah

  • Oaths (89:1–5): enough, the surah says, for anyone with understanding.
  • Three nations (89:6–14): ’Ad of Iram with its lofty pillars, Thamud who carved rock in the valley, and Pharaoh of the stakes — all spread corruption, and God is ever watchful.
  • Misreading the test (89:15–20): when given plenty, a person feels honoured; when provision is tight, he feels humiliated. In fact both are tests, and the real failure is neglecting the orphan, not urging the feeding of the poor, devouring inheritance and loving wealth excessively.
  • The Day itself (89:21–26): the earth is ground down, the Lord comes with the angels in ranks, and a person wishes he had sent good ahead for his life.
  • The soul at peace (89:27–30): invited to return to its Lord, pleased and pleasing, and to enter among His servants and His garden.

Which ten nights?

The surah does not specify. Many commentators understand the ten nights as the first ten of Dhul-Hijjah, the month of pilgrimage; others suggest the last ten nights of Ramadan. The “even and odd” are likewise interpreted in several ways, from particular days of the pilgrimage to all of creation in pairs alongside God who is One.
