About Surah Al-Hajj

Al-Hajj, “The Pilgrimage”, takes its name from the passage in which Abraham is commanded to call people to the pilgrimage to the House in Mecca. It opens with a vivid scene of the earthquake of the Hour, speaks of resurrection through the stages of human creation, and touches on sacrifice, the first permission for the believers to defend themselves, and the duty to strive sincerely for God.

Main themes

  • The shock of the Hour (22:1–2): a day so terrible that a nursing mother forgets her infant and people seem drunk though they are not.
  • Proof of resurrection (22:5): from dust to a drop, then a clinging form, then a lump of flesh — and the dry earth that stirs to life when rain falls on it.
  • Abraham and the House (22:26–29): the Kaaba is to be kept pure for worshippers, and Abraham is told to proclaim the pilgrimage so that people come on foot and on lean camels from distant paths.
  • The meaning of sacrifice (22:37): neither the meat nor the blood of animals reaches God; what reaches Him is the devotion of the one who offers it.
  • Permission to defend (22:39–40): those who were wronged and driven from their homes only for saying “Our Lord is God” are permitted to fight back. Many scholars regard this as the first verse giving such permission.

Hearts that see

A memorable line observes that it is not the eyes that go blind but the hearts within the breasts (22:46). Later, a parable challenges idols to create even a fly — or to win back what a fly snatches from them (22:73). The surah ends by telling believers that God has chosen them, laid no hardship on them in religion, and named them Muslims, following the way of their father Abraham (22:78).

Al-Hajj contains a widely agreed verse of prostration (22:18). Several schools also prostrate at 22:77, while the Hanafi school does not count that second one. The dataset here lists the surah as Medinan; scholars differ, and many describe it as a mix of Meccan and Medinan passages.

Allah named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakah and hold fast to Allah. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper
