About Surah Al-Hujurat

Al-Hujurat, “The Rooms”, is a short Medinan surah often described as a guide to manners. In eighteen verses it teaches respect towards the Prophet, checking news before acting on it, making peace between quarrelling believers, and avoiding mockery, suspicion, spying and backbiting. It reminds all humanity that its peoples and tribes exist to know one another, and that honour lies in God-consciousness.

Manners towards the Prophet

The opening (49:1–5) tells believers not to put themselves ahead of God and His Messenger, nor raise their voices above his. Sahih al-Bukhari connects 49:2 with a moment when Abu Bakr and ’Umar raised their voices disagreeing in his presence. The name comes from 49:4, about people who called out to the Prophet from outside his family’s rooms; it is commonly linked to a visiting tribal delegation.

Life in a community

  • Verify the news (49:6): if an untrustworthy person brings a report, check it, lest you harm people out of ignorance and later regret it.
  • Make peace (49:9–10): when two groups of believers fight, reconcile them justly, for the believers are brothers.
  • Guard the tongue (49:11): do not mock others, who may be better than you, nor insult one another or use offensive nicknames.
  • Guard the heart (49:12): avoid much suspicion, do not spy, and do not backbite — compared to eating the flesh of a dead brother.

One human family

49:13 addresses all people: they were created from a male and a female and made into nations and tribes so they might know one another, and the noblest of them before God is the most righteous. The final verses (49:14–18) distinguish outward submission from faith that has entered the heart, and remind believers that guidance is God’s favour to them, not theirs to Him.

And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers
