About Surah Al-Inshiqaq

Al-Inshiqaq, “The Sundering”, takes its name from its opening image of the sky splitting apart on the Last Day. In 25 verses it describes the sky and earth obeying their Lord, reminds every person that they are toiling steadily towards a meeting with God, and contrasts the one who receives the record of his deeds in his right hand with the one who receives it behind his back.

Flow of the surah

  • Sky and earth submit (84:1–5): the sky splits, the earth is stretched out and empties what it holds, both listening to their Lord as they must.
  • The human journey (84:6): every person is striving, with real effort, towards their Lord — and will meet Him.
  • Two records (84:7–15): one receives an easy reckoning and returns joyfully to his people; the other, who once lived carefree among his family and assumed he would never return to God, cries out for ruin.
  • Oaths and stages (84:16–19): by the evening twilight, the night and the full moon, people will pass from one stage to another.
  • A question to the deniers (84:20–25): why do they not believe or bow down when the Quran is recited? The surah closes with an unending reward for those who believe and do good.

The easy reckoning

In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Aisha asked the Prophet about the “easy account” of 84:8. He explained that it refers to deeds simply being presented, whereas whoever is examined closely in the reckoning is ruined — a reminder that salvation rests on God’s mercy.

A place of prostration

84:21 is one of the places where many Muslims make a prostration of recitation. Sahih Muslim records Abu Hurayrah describing prostrating with the Prophet when this surah was recited.
