About Surah Al-Jumu'ah
Al-Jumu’ah, “Friday” or “The Congregation”, is a short Medinan surah best known for commanding believers to hasten to the remembrance of God when the call is made for the Friday prayer and to leave trade aside. It also describes the mission of the Prophet among an unlettered people and warns against carrying scripture without acting on it.
Main themes
- The Prophet’s mission (62:2–4): God sent among the unlettered a messenger from among themselves, reciting His verses, purifying them and teaching them the Book and wisdom — and to others who had not yet joined them. Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that when asked who these others were, the Prophet placed his hand on Salman the Persian and said that even if faith were as far as the Pleiades, men from his people would reach it.
- Knowledge without action (62:5–8): those given the Torah who did not live by it are likened to a donkey carrying books; and death, which people flee from, will meet them.
- The Friday prayer (62:9–10): when the call is made on Friday, go to the remembrance of God and leave buying and selling; once the prayer is over, spread through the land and seek God’s bounty.
- The caravan (62:11): a hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari, narrated by Jabir, describes a trade caravan arriving during the Friday sermon and most of the people leaving to see it, with only a small number remaining with the Prophet.
Recitation in the Friday prayer
According to Sahih Muslim, the Prophet sometimes recited Al-Jumu’ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun (63) in the two units of the Friday prayer, and many imams follow this practice today. The balance in the surah — worship when it is time, work when it is over — is often highlighted as a model for the believer’s week.
