About Surah Al-Layl
Al-Layl, “The Night”, swears by the night, the day and the creation of male and female, and then states simply that people’s efforts are diverse. It divides people by what they do with their wealth: the generous, God-conscious believer is eased towards ease, while the miser who thinks himself self-sufficient is eased towards hardship. It closes with a portrait of someone who gives only for the sake of his Lord.
Structure
- Oaths and their answer (92:1–4): night and day, male and female — and human striving takes many directions.
- Two paths (92:5–11): giving, fearing God and affirming the best reward leads to ease; withholding, self-satisfaction and denial lead to difficulty, and wealth will not help when one falls.
- God’s guidance (92:12–16): guidance is from Him, this life and the next belong to Him, and the blazing fire awaits the most wretched who denied and turned away.
- The sincere giver (92:17–21): he gives his wealth to purify himself, not to repay a favour, but seeking only his Lord’s face — and he will be content.
“Each is eased towards what he was created for”
In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, Ali reports that the Prophet spoke of everyone’s place being known to God. When the companions asked whether they should then simply rely on that, he told them to keep doing good, because each person is eased towards what he was created for, and he recited 92:5–10.
Abu Bakr
Many classical commentators say the closing verses were revealed about Abu Bakr, who spent his wealth buying and freeing enslaved Muslims such as Bilal. The words themselves are general and apply to anyone who gives in this way.
