About Surah An-Nazi'at
An-Nazi’at, “Those Who Pull Out”, is a Meccan surah that opens with oaths by beings that extract and draw out — understood by many commentators as the angels who take souls at death. It describes the trembling of hearts on the Day of the two blasts, retells the confrontation between Moses and Pharaoh, points to the heavens and earth, and ends with the question everyone asks: when is the Hour?
Main themes
- The oaths (79:1–5): by those who pull out harshly and those who draw out gently, those who glide, race ahead and arrange affairs. Many commentators explain these as angels — some taking the souls of the wicked forcefully and of the believers gently.
- Two blasts (79:6–14): the first quake followed by a second; hearts pounding and eyes downcast, while deniers ask whether decayed bones can live again. It will take only a single cry.
- Moses and Pharaoh (79:15–26): called in the sacred valley of Tuwa, Moses is sent to invite Pharaoh to purify himself; Pharaoh denies, gathers his people and proclaims himself their highest lord, and is seized as an example.
- Heaven and earth (79:27–33): are humans harder to create than the sky He raised, the night He darkened and the earth He spread with water, pasture and mountains?
Two kinds of people
When the great Overwhelming Event comes (79:34–41), a person will remember what he strove for. The one who transgressed and preferred this life will find his refuge in Hell; the one who feared standing before his Lord and restrained the self from its desires will find his refuge in Paradise. These verses are often quoted on self-discipline.
The surah ends (79:42–46) with people asking the Prophet when the Hour will come. He is only a warner; its knowledge rests with his Lord, and when they see it, it will seem they had lingered only an evening or a morning.

79:17Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed
79:18And say to him, 'Would you [be willing to] purify yourself
79:19And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear [Him]

79:25So Allah seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first [transgression]

79:29And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness
79:30And after that He spread the earth
79:31He extracted from it its water and its pasture
79:32And the mountains He set firmly
79:33As provision for you and your grazing livestock
79:34But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity
79:35The Day when man will remember that for which he strove
79:36And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see
79:37So as for he who transgressed
79:38And preferred the life of the world
79:39Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge
79:40But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination
79:41Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge
79:42They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival
79:43In what [position] are you that you should mention it
79:44To your Lord is its finality
79:45You are only a warner for those who fear it
79:46It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof
