About Surah As-Saffat

As-Saffat, “Those who set the Ranks”, is a Meccan surah of short, rhythmic verses. It opens with an oath by the angels standing in rows and declares that God is One, then answers those who mocked the idea of resurrection. Its long central section passes through the lives of several prophets — Noah, Abraham, Moses and Aaron, Elias, Lot and Jonah — before closing with praise of God and peace upon all the messengers.

Main themes

  • The oneness of God (37:1–5): oaths by angels in ranks lead to the statement that your God is One, Lord of the heavens, the earth and every place of sunrise.
  • Resurrection doubted and then witnessed (37:11–39): the deniers ask how dust and bones could live again; a single cry raises them, and on that Day leaders and followers turn on one another.
  • A conversation in Paradise (37:50–61): a believer recalls a friend who used to ridicule his faith, looks down and sees him in the Fire, and gives thanks that he was not led astray. The tree of zaqqum is described in contrast (37:62–68).

The prophets and a recurring greeting

Each prophet’s account ends in almost the same way: God leaves him an honoured mention among later generations, sends peace upon him, and says that this is how He rewards those who do good. The greeting falls on Noah (37:79), Abraham (37:109), Moses and Aaron (37:120) and Elias (37:130). Jonah’s story (37:139–148) tells of the ship, the fish, his glorification of God and his return to a people of a hundred thousand or more, who believed.

Abraham’s sacrifice

37:99–111 tell how Abraham saw in a dream that he was to sacrifice his son, how both submitted, and how God ransomed the boy with a great sacrifice — the origin of the sacrifice Muslims offer at Eid al-Adha. Because the good news of Isaac is given separately afterwards (37:112), most scholars hold that the son in this story was Ishmael; a minority of early authorities said it was Isaac.

37:101So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy

37:102And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast

37:103And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead

37:104We called to him, "O Abraham

37:105You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

37:106Indeed, this was the clear trial

37:107And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice

37:108And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations

    37:109Peace upon Abraham

37:110Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

37:111Indeed, he was of Our believing servants

37:112And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous

37:113And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself

37:114And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron

37:115And We saved them and their people from the great affliction

37:116And We supported them so it was they who overcame

37:117And We gave them the explicit Scripture

37:118And We guided them on the straight path

37:119And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations

    37:120Peace upon Moses and Aaron

37:122Indeed, they were of Our believing servants

37:123And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers

37:124When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allah

37:125Do you call upon Ba'l and leave the best of creators

37:126Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers

37:127And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought [for punishment]

37:128Except the chosen servants of Allah

37:129And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations

    37:130Peace upon Elias

37:131Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good

37:132Indeed, he was of Our believing servants

37:133And indeed, Lot was among the messengers

37:134[So mention] when We saved him and his family, all

37:135Except his wife among those who remained [with the evildoers]

    37:136Then We destroyed the others

37:137And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

37:138And at night. Then will you not use reason

37:139And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers

37:140[Mention] when he ran away to the laden ship

37:141And he drew lots and was among the losers

37:142Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy

37:143And had he not been of those who exalt Allah

37:144He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected

37:145But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill

37:146And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine

37:147And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more

37:148And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time

37:149So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons

37:150Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses

37:151Unquestionably, it is out of their [invented] falsehood that they say

37:152Allah has begotten," and indeed, they are liars

37:153Has He chosen daughters over sons

37:154What is [wrong] with you? How do you make judgement

37:155Then will you not be reminded

37:156Or do you have a clear authority

37:157Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful

37:158And they have claimed between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought to [punishment]

37:159Exalted is Allah above what they describe

37:160Except the chosen servants of Allah [who do not share in that sin]

37:161So indeed, you [disbelievers] and whatever you worship

37:162You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him

37:163Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire

37:164[The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position

37:165And indeed, we are those who line up [for prayer]

37:166And indeed, we are those who exalt Allah

37:167And indeed, the disbelievers used to say

37:168If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples

37:169We would have been the chosen servants of Allah

37:170But they disbelieved in it, so they are going to know

37:171And Our word has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers

37:172[That] indeed, they would be those given victory

37:173And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome

37:174So, [O Muhammad], leave them for a time

37:175And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see

37:176Then for Our punishment are they impatient

37:177But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned

37:178And leave them for a time

37:179And see, for they are going to see

37:180Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe

    37:181And peace upon the messengers

37:182And praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds
