About Surah At-Tin
At-Tin, “The Fig”, swears by the fig and the olive, by Mount Sinai and by “this secure city” of Mecca. Its answer concerns human dignity: people were created in the finest form, yet can fall to the lowest of the low — except those who believe and do good. It ends with a question: is God not the most just of judges?
The four oaths
In 95:1–3, commentators have read the fig and olive either as the fruits themselves, valued for their benefit, or as pointing to the lands where they grow — often linked with the region of Jerusalem and Syria. Many see the three sites as connected with three prophets: the Holy Land with Jesus, Sinai with Moses, and Mecca with Muhammad.
The human being
- The finest form (95:4): the human was made in the best stature, in body and in capacity.
- The lowest of the low (95:5): explained either as the weakness of extreme old age or as the spiritual fall of those who reject guidance.
- The exception (95:6): believers who do righteous deeds receive an unending reward.
- Judgement (95:7–8): after all this, what makes anyone deny the recompense? God is the wisest of judges.
A beautiful recitation
In Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the companion al-Bara’ ibn ’Azib recalls hearing the Prophet recite At-Tin in the night prayer while on a journey, and says he never heard anyone with a more beautiful voice or recitation.
