About Surah Nuh

Nuh, “Noah”, is a Meccan surah devoted entirely to the prophet Noah and his people. Told largely in Noah’s own voice as he reports to God, it describes centuries-long patience in calling them, the different methods he tried, his promise that seeking forgiveness brings rain and prosperity, the idols his people clung to, and the flood that followed.

Noah’s call

  • The mission (71:1–4): Noah is sent to warn his people before a painful punishment, and urges them to worship God, fear Him and obey him so that their sins may be forgiven.
  • Every approach (71:5–9): he called them night and day, publicly and privately, yet they only fled further, putting their fingers in their ears and covering themselves with their garments.
  • Seek forgiveness (71:10–12): he tells them to ask their Lord’s forgiveness, for He is ever forgiving — He will send abundant rain and give them wealth, children, gardens and rivers. Many Muslims cite these verses on the worldly as well as spiritual blessings of istighfar.
  • Signs in creation (71:13–20): humans created in stages, seven heavens in layers, the moon as a light and the sun as a lamp, people grown from the earth like plants and returned to it, and the earth spread out for travel.

The idols and the end

71:23 names five idols — Wadd, Suwa’, Yaghuth, Ya’uq and Nasr. A report in Sahih al-Bukhari from Ibn Abbas says these were originally names of righteous men among Noah’s people; after their deaths, statues were made to remember them, and later generations came to worship them. The people were drowned for their sins (71:25).

The surah closes with Noah’s prayer (71:26–28): he asks God not to leave the deniers on the earth, and then seeks forgiveness for himself, his parents, whoever enters his house as a believer, and all believing men and women — a supplication many Muslims still make. The flood itself is told in more detail in Surah Hud (11).
