About Surah Quraysh
Quraysh is named after the tribe of Mecca to which the Prophet belonged. In four verses it reminds them of the security and familiar routine God had granted them — their trading journeys in winter and summer — and calls on them to worship the Lord of the Kaaba, who fed them against hunger and made them safe from fear.
Verse by verse
- Familiar security (106:1–2): the word ilaf conveys the habit, safety and agreements that made their caravan journeys possible in winter and summer.
- The response (106:3): so let them worship the Lord of this House.
- Two blessings (106:4): He fed them when they might have been hungry and gave them safety when they might have feared.
Background
Mecca lay in a barren valley with little farming, so its people lived largely by trade. Commentators explain that the winter caravan went south towards Yemen and the summer caravan north towards Syria. Because Quraysh were custodians of the Kaaba, other Arabs respected them, and their caravans could travel in relative safety when others could not.
Link with Al-Fil
The surah reads as a continuation of Surah Al-Fil (105): God defended the House from Abraha’s army, and this protection is part of what made the tribe’s security possible. Some early reports mention that a few companions wrote the two surahs without a separating basmala, but the accepted text, followed in every mushaf today, keeps them as two surahs.
The basic message is that comfort and safety are gifts, and the right response to them is gratitude and worship.
