About Surah Adh-Dhariyat

Adh-Dhariyat, “The Winnowing Winds”, is a Meccan surah that opens with oaths by forces of nature — commonly explained as the scattering winds, the rain-laden clouds, the smoothly sailing ships and the angels who distribute God’s commands — to affirm that the promised judgement is true. It portrays the night prayer of the righteous, revisits Abraham’s honoured guests, and states plainly the purpose for which jinn and humans were created.

Main themes

  • A promise that will come (51:1–14): the oaths lead to the certainty of recompense, while the doubters ask mockingly when the Day will be.
  • The night of the righteous (51:15–19): they slept little, sought forgiveness before dawn, and recognised a right in their wealth for those who ask and those who are deprived.
  • Signs on earth and in yourselves (51:20–23): provision is in the heavens, and the promise is as real as the fact that you speak.
  • Abraham’s guests (51:24–37): he hurries to serve a roasted calf to strangers, who bring news of a knowledgeable son, then reveal they are sent against the people of Lot, where only one household of believers was found.
  • Further lessons (51:38–46): Moses and Pharaoh, the barren wind sent on ’Ad, the thunderbolt that seized Thamud, and the people of Noah.

Flee to God

After describing the heaven built with strength and the earth spread out, and the creation of all things in pairs (51:47–49), the surah calls people to “flee to God” (51:50–51).

The purpose of creation

51:56–58 are among the most quoted verses on why people exist: God created jinn and humans only to worship Him. He seeks no provision from them; He is the Provider, Lord of firm strength. The Prophet is also reminded that reminding benefits the believers (51:55).
