About Surah At-Tur

At-Tur, “The Mount”, is a Meccan surah that opens with oaths by the mountain where Moses received revelation, a written Book, the much-visited House, the raised canopy of the sky and the swelling sea. They lead to a stark statement: the punishment of your Lord will surely come. The surah then sets the joy of the righteous against a rapid series of questions put to those who reject the message.

Main themes

  • The oaths (52:1–8): the Mount is commonly identified with Sinai, and the “frequented House” (al-bayt al-ma’mur) is described in hadith of the Night Journey in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim as a house in heaven visited daily by seventy thousand angels.
  • That Day (52:9–16): the sky heaves, the mountains move, and the deniers are asked whether the Fire is also “magic”.
  • The righteous (52:17–28): they eat and drink in contentment and recall that they used to live in awe of God among their families.
  • Families joined (52:21): believers whose children followed them in faith will have those children joined with them, without any loss to their own deeds.

The questions

52:29–43 answer the charges that the Prophet is a soothsayer, a madman or a poet, then press a chain of questions, each opening with “or”: were they created from nothing, or are they their own creators? Did they create the heavens and the earth (52:35–36)? Do they hold the treasures of God, or have a stairway to listen to heaven? Sahih al-Bukhari reports that Jubayr ibn Mut’im, before accepting Islam, heard the Prophet recite At-Tur in the sunset prayer, and when he reached these verses, his heart almost flew.

Patience and praise

The surah closes by telling the Prophet he is under God’s watchful eyes, and to glorify his Lord when he rises, during the night and as the stars fade (52:48–49).
