About Surah Al-Furqan
Al-Furqan, “The Criterion”, is a Meccan surah named after one of the Quran’s own titles: the standard that separates truth from falsehood. Much of it answers the objections raised against the Prophet in Mecca, comforts him, and points to signs in nature. It closes with one of the most loved passages of the Quran, a portrait of the “servants of the Most Merciful”.
Answering the objections
The opponents ask what kind of messenger eats food and walks in the markets (25:7), and why the Quran was not revealed all at once (25:32). The surah replies that it came in stages to strengthen the Prophet’s heart. It also records the Prophet’s lament on the Day of Judgement that his people treated this Quran as something abandoned (25:30), a verse often quoted as a reminder to read and act on the Quran.
Signs in nature
The listener is invited to watch the shadow lengthen and shrink, to see night as a covering and sleep as rest, and to notice two bodies of water, one sweet and one salty, kept apart by a barrier. The section ends with a verse of prostration (25:60).
The servants of the Most Merciful
25:63–77 describe people who walk on the earth humbly and answer the ignorant with peace; who spend the night in prayer; who are neither wasteful nor stingy; and who avoid false gods, unjust killing and adultery. Even those who did wrong are offered hope: for those who repent and do good, God will replace their bad deeds with good ones (25:70). The passage includes a prayer for spouses and children who are a comfort to the eyes (25:74), widely used in marriage and family life.
A famous hadith
Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim relate that ’Umar heard Hisham ibn Hakim reciting Al-Furqan differently from the way he had learned it. The Prophet listened to both and approved each, explaining that the Quran was revealed in seven modes (ahruf).

25:41And when they see you, [O Muhammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allah has sent as a messenger
25:42He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way
25:43Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him

25:45Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication
25:46Then We hold it in hand for a brief grasp
25:47And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection
25:48And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy, and We send down from the sky pure water
25:49That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men
25:50And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded, but most of the people refuse except disbelief
25:51And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner
25:52So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with the Qur'an a great striving
25:53And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas, one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition
25:54And it is He who has created from water a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation]
25:55But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan]
