About Surah Ash-Shu'ara

Ash-Shu’ara, “The Poets”, is a Meccan surah and the second longest in the Quran by number of verses, though its verses are short. It opens with the letters Ta-Sin-Mim and tells the stories of seven prophets in a strikingly regular pattern, each closed by the same refrain. Its name comes from the final passage, which contrasts the Prophet with the poets of his time.

Seven stories, one pattern

The last five messengers speak in almost the same words: each tells his people that he is a trustworthy messenger, asks no payment from them, and calls them to be mindful of God and obey him. Each story then closes with a refrain stating that in this is a sign, though most of them did not believe, and that the Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. The repetition makes the message unmistakable: the same truth, the same rejection, the same outcome.

A sound heart

In Abraham’s prayer comes a phrase much quoted by preachers: on the Day when neither wealth nor children help, only the one who comes to God with a sound heart will benefit (26:88–89).

Warning the nearest kin, and the poets

The Prophet is told to warn his closest relatives (26:214). Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim relate that when this was revealed he stood on the hill of as-Safa and called the clans of Quraysh by name. The surah ends (26:224–227) by describing poets who wander in every valley and say what they do not do — with an explicit exception for poets who believe, do good and remember God often.

26:199And he had recited it to them [perfectly], they would [still] not have been believers in it

26:200Thus have We inserted disbelief into the hearts of the criminals

26:201They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment

26:202And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not

26:203And they will say, "May we be reprieved

26:204So for Our punishment are they impatient

26:205Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

26:206And then there came to them that which they were promised

26:207They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided

26:208And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners

26:209As a reminder; and never have We been unjust

26:210And the devils have not brought the revelation down

26:211It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able

26:212Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed

26:213So do not invoke with Allah another deity and [thus] be among the punished

26:214And warn, [O Muhammad], your closest kindred

26:215And lower your wing to those who follow you of the believers

26:216And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing

26:217And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful

26:218Who sees you when you arise

26:219And your movement among those who prostrate

26:220Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing

26:221Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend

26:222They descend upon every sinful liar

26:223They pass on what is heard, and most of them are liars

26:224And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them

26:225Do you not see that in every valley they roam

26:226And that they say what they do not do

26:227Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allah often and defend [the Muslims] after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned
