About Surah Al-Humazah
Al-Humazah, “The Traducer”, condemns two linked faults: belittling and mocking other people, and hoarding wealth in the belief that it will make one last forever. It answers that arrogance with a stark image of al-Hutamah, “the Crusher”, a fire that reaches into the heart.
Verse by verse
- Woe to the mocker (104:1): the words humazah and lumazah describe someone who habitually slanders and ridicules others, whether with words or gestures.
- The hoarder (104:2–3): he gathers wealth, counts it again and again, and imagines it will make him immortal.
- The Crusher (104:4–7): he will be flung into al-Hutamah, the kindled fire of God that rises over the hearts.
- Sealed in (104:8–9): it closes over them in extended columns.
Why these faults go together
Commentators observe that contempt for others often grows from a sense of superiority that wealth can feed. The punishment mirrors the sin: the one who “crushed” others with his tongue meets the Crusher, and the fire reaches the heart, where the arrogance began.
Early scholars differed on the exact difference between humazah and lumazah — one view says the first is mocking to someone’s face and the second behind their back, and others reverse it. Some reports name particular opponents of the Prophet in Mecca as the occasion, but commentators stress that the warning applies to anyone with these traits.
