About Surah Al-Falaq
Al-Falaq, “The Daybreak”, is a short prayer for protection. It seeks refuge in the Lord of the daybreak from the evil of what He created, from the darkness of night, from those who blow on knots (a reference to sorcery), and from the envier when he envies.
Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas (114) are called al-Mu’awwidhatayn, “the two surahs of seeking refuge”. A hadith in Sahih Muslim describes them as verses unlike any others revealed, and other reports encourage reciting them after each prayer, in the morning and evening, and before sleep.
Classical reports link their revelation to an occasion when the Prophet was afflicted by sorcery and was cured by them. Scholars differ on whether the two surahs are Meccan or Medinan; the dataset used here lists Al-Falaq as Meccan.
