About Surah Al-Infitar

Al-Infitar, “The Cleaving Asunder”, is a short Meccan surah. In four brief verses it pictures the sky splitting, the stars scattering, the seas bursting forth and the graves overturned. It then turns to the human being with one of the Quran’s most searching questions — what has deceived you about your Lord, the Most Generous? — and reminds people that noble angels record everything they do.

Main themes

  • The world undone (82:1–5): when the sky splits, the stars scatter, the seas erupt and the graves are turned over, every soul will know what it sent ahead and what it left behind.
  • A personal question (82:6–8): the human being is asked what deluded him regarding his generous Lord, who created him, proportioned him, balanced him and assembled him in whatever form He willed. The question invites reflection rather than despair — the very name chosen, the Generous, hints at mercy.
  • The guardians (82:9–12): people deny the Judgement, yet over them are guardians, noble scribes (kiraman katibin) who know what they do.
  • Two outcomes (82:13–16): the righteous in bliss and the wicked in a blaze they will never leave.

The closing

The surah twice asks what will make you understand the Day of Judgement, and answers in its final verse (82:19): it is a Day when no soul can do anything for another, and the command that Day belongs entirely to God.

Al-Infitar shares its imagery and opening style with Surah At-Takwir (81) and Surah Al-Inshiqaq (84); a narration in at-Tirmidhi groups the three together as surahs that let the listener picture the Day of Resurrection.
