About Surah Al-Muddaththir
Al-Muddaththir, “The Cloaked One”, is among the very first passages revealed to the Prophet. It calls on him, wrapped in his cloak, to arise and warn, and gives him a short set of personal commands. It then describes a powerful opponent who called the Quran mere magic, the fire of Saqar and its nineteen keepers, and the confessions of those who end up there.
Its place in revelation
Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah, describe how, after a pause in revelation, the Prophet saw the angel who had come to him at Hira, rushed home asking to be wrapped up, and then the opening verses were revealed. Most scholars hold that the first verses of Surah Al-'Alaq (96) came first, and these opened the public mission.
Main themes
- Arise and warn (74:1–7): magnify your Lord, purify your garments, shun idolatry, do not give in order to gain more, and be patient for your Lord.
- The opponent (74:11–25): a man given wealth and sons who still wanted more; he thought and calculated, frowned and scowled, then turned away in pride and declared the Quran only magic and the words of a man. Commentators commonly identify him as al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah.
- Saqar (74:26–31): a fire that leaves nothing; over it are nineteen. The surah explains that this number was set as a test for the deniers and to strengthen the certainty of believers.
- The confession (74:38–48): asked what brought them to Saqar, the guilty say they did not pray, did not feed the poor, joined in idle talk and denied the Day of Judgement.
The closing verses (74:49–56) compare those fleeing the reminder to startled donkeys running from a lion, and end by stating that the Quran is a reminder for whoever wills — though none will take heed unless God wills.

74:11Leave Me with the one I created alone
74:12And to whom I granted extensive wealth

74:15Then he desires that I should add more
74:16No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate
74:17I will cover him with arduous torment
74:18Indeed, he thought and deliberated
74:19So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated
74:20Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated

74:24And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]
74:25This is not but the word of a human being
74:26I will drive him into Saqar
74:27And what can make you know what is Saqar
74:28It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned]
74:29Blackening the skins
74:30Over it are nineteen [angels]
74:31And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity
74:32No! By the moon
74:33And [by] the night when it departs
74:34And [by] the morning when it brightens
74:35Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]
74:36As a warning to humanity
74:37To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind
74:38Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained
74:39Except the companions of the right
74:40[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other
74:41About the criminals
74:42[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar
74:43They will say, "We were not of those who prayed
74:44Nor did we used to feed the poor
74:45And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it]
74:46And we used to deny the Day of Recompense
74:47Until there came to us the certainty
74:48So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors
74:49Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away
74:50As if they were alarmed donkeys
74:51Fleeing from a lion
74:52Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about
74:53No! But they do not fear the Hereafter
74:54No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder
74:55Then whoever wills will remember it
74:56And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness
