About Surah Al-Qiyamah
Al-Qiyamah, “The Resurrection”, is a Meccan surah that swears by the Day of Resurrection and by the self-reproaching soul. It answers those who doubt that scattered bones can be gathered, describes the panic of that Day, pauses to teach the Prophet how to receive revelation, and ends with the moment of death and a simple argument from human creation.
Main themes
- Two oaths (75:1–2): by the Day of Resurrection, and by an-nafs al-lawwamah, the conscience that blames its owner — commonly understood as the believer’s self-reproach.
- Even the fingertips (75:3–4): God is able not only to gather human bones but to restore the fine detail of the fingertips.
- No escape (75:7–15): when sight is dazzled and sun and moon are joined, a person asks where to flee; he will be told what he sent ahead and held back, and will be a witness against himself, whatever excuses he offers.
- Faces on that Day (75:22–25): some radiant, looking at their Lord; others gloomy. Sunni scholars cite 75:23 as evidence that believers will see God in the Hereafter.
A lesson inside the surah
75:16–19 tell the Prophet not to move his tongue hastily to memorise revelation, for God will gather it in his heart, recite it and explain it. A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari from Ibn Abbas describes how the Prophet would move his lips quickly while revelation came, and after these verses he would listen and then recite as he had heard.
Death and creation
The closing passage pictures the soul reaching the throat as people ask who can heal, and the dying person realising it is the parting (75:26–30). It ends by asking whether man thinks he will be left without purpose, recalling his growth from a drop to a formed being, male and female, and asking: is not the One who did this able to give life to the dead? (75:36–40).

75:1I swear by the Day of Resurrection
75:2And I swear by the reproaching soul [to the certainty of resurrection]
75:3Does man think that We will not assemble his bones
75:4Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips
75:5But man desires to continue in sin
75:6He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection
75:7So when vision is dazzled
75:8And the moon darkens
75:9And the sun and the moon are joined

75:13Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and kept back
75:14Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness
75:15Even if he presents his excuses
75:16Move not your tongue with it, [O Muhammad], to hasten with recitation of the Qur'an
75:17Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation

75:21And leave the Hereafter
75:22[Some] faces, that Day, will be radiant
75:23Looking at their Lord

75:24And [some] faces, that Day, will be contorted
75:25Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking

75:30To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession
75:31And the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed
75:32But [instead], he denied and turned away
75:33And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride]
75:34Woe to you, and woe
75:35Then woe to you, and woe
75:36Does man think that he will be left neglected
75:37Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted
