About Surah Al-Mursalat
Al-Mursalat, “Those Sent Forth”, is a Meccan surah built around a single, repeated warning: “woe that Day to the deniers”, which occurs ten times. It opens with oaths by things sent forth in succession, describes the cosmic collapse that precedes Judgement, and alternates between signs in human creation and the earth and scenes of the fate awaiting those who deny.
Structure
- The oaths (77:1–7): by those sent forth one after another, the storming ones and those that spread, and those bringing a reminder — interpreted by commentators as winds, angels, or both — that what is promised will surely happen.
- Signs of the Day (77:8–15): stars extinguished, the sky split, mountains scattered, and messengers gathered at their appointed time for the Day of Decision.
- Signs in creation (77:20–28): humans created from a humble fluid kept in a secure place for a known term; the earth made to hold the living and the dead, with firm mountains and sweet water.
- The fate of deniers (77:29–40): a shadow of three columns giving no shade, sparks like great castles, a Day on which they cannot speak or offer excuses.
- The righteous (77:41–44): shade, springs and fruits of their choosing.
The refrain
The warning first appears at 77:15 and returns after each scene, acting like a bell that rings after each argument. The final verse (77:50) asks in what message after this they will believe.
In the hadith
A hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim from Ibn Mas’ud recounts that the surah was revealed while the Prophet and his companions were in a cave at Mina, and that a snake appeared there. Umm al-Fadl reported, also in both collections, that the last time she heard the Prophet recite in the sunset prayer, he recited Al-Mursalat.
