About Surah Al-Insan

Al-Insan, “Man” (also known as Ad-Dahr, “Time”), begins by asking whether there was a time when the human being was nothing worth mentioning. It traces human creation and free choice, then devotes most of its verses to the righteous — people who keep their vows and feed the poor, the orphan and the captive purely for God’s sake — and to a gentle, detailed picture of their reward.

Main themes

  • Creation and choice (76:1–3): created from a mingled drop to be tested, given hearing and sight, and shown the way — whether grateful or ungrateful.
  • The righteous (76:5–10): they fulfil their vows, fear a Day of widespread evil, and give food despite their love for it to the needy, the orphan and the captive, saying they seek neither reward nor thanks, only the face of God.
  • Their reward (76:11–22): radiance and joy, a garden and silk, shade without scorching sun or bitter cold, vessels of silver, drink mixed with camphor and ginger from a spring named Salsabil, and the words “your effort has been appreciated”.
  • Counsel to the Prophet (76:23–26): the Quran was sent down in stages; be patient, do not obey the sinful, remember your Lord morning and evening and prostrate to Him through the night.

Recitation and classification

Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that the Prophet recited Surah As-Sajdah (32) and Al-Insan in the dawn prayer on Fridays, a practice many mosques keep. The dataset used here lists the surah as Medinan; scholars differ, and a large number consider it Meccan.

A popular account says verses 8–9 were revealed about Ali, Fatimah and their household giving away their food for three days; many hadith scholars consider this story unreliable, while the verses themselves describe a quality open to every believer.
