About Surah Al-Qamar
Al-Qamar, “The Moon”, is a Meccan surah that begins by announcing that the Hour has drawn near and the moon has split. It then runs swiftly through the stories of Noah, ’Ad, Thamud, the people of Lot and Pharaoh, each closed by a refrain: the Quran has been made easy to remember — is there anyone who will take heed? Its short, striking verses make it a favourite for recitation.
The splitting of the moon
54:1–3 describe the moon splitting and the deniers dismissing it as passing magic. Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, narrated by Ibn Mas’ud, Anas and others, describe the Meccans asking for a sign and the moon being seen split in two. Most scholars therefore understand the verse as an event in the Prophet’s lifetime, while a minority read it as describing what will happen at the Hour.
Five peoples who denied
- Noah (54:9–17): called a madman, he prayed for help; the sky’s gates opened, the earth burst with springs, and he was carried on a vessel of planks and nails.
- ’Ad (54:18–22): a howling wind tore people up like uprooted palm trunks.
- Thamud (54:23–32): they rejected a human messenger and hamstrung the she-camel sent as a test.
- Lot’s people (54:33–40): a storm of stones, while Lot’s family was saved before dawn.
- Pharaoh’s people (54:41–42): they denied every sign and were seized.
The refrain
Four times — 54:17, 54:22, 54:32 and 54:40 — the surah repeats that the Quran has been made easy for remembrance. It is often quoted to encourage memorising and reflecting on the Quran.
Badr and divine decree
Sahih al-Bukhari reports that on the day of Badr the Prophet came out of his tent reciting 54:45, that the gathered host would be routed and turn their backs. 54:49, that everything is created by measure, is a key verse on divine decree (qadar). The surah ends with the God-fearing among gardens and rivers, in a seat of honour near the All-Powerful King (54:54–55). Sahih Muslim reports that the Prophet recited Al-Qamar together with Surah Qaf (50) in the Eid prayers.
