About Surah Ar-Rahman

Ar-Rahman, named after God’s name “the Most Merciful”, is one of the most recognisable surahs of the Quran because of its refrain, repeated 31 times: a question to humans and jinn asking which of their Lord’s favours they would deny. It moves from the blessings of creation to the Day of Judgement and descriptions of Paradise.

Structure

  • Teaching and creation (55:1–25): the Most Merciful taught the Quran, created the human being and taught him speech; the sun, moon, stars, plants, the balance, the two seas and the ships.
  • Everything passes but God (55:26–45): all on earth will perish; the reckoning of humans and jinn.
  • Two pairs of gardens (55:46–78): the reward of those who feared standing before their Lord.

The refrain

The refrain first appears at 55:13 and returns after each blessing or warning. Commentators explain that it addresses two audiences, humans and jinn, and invites the listener to acknowledge each favour in turn. Its rhythm makes the surah especially moving when recited aloud, and it is one of the most popular surahs for recitation videos.

Meccan or Medinan?

The dataset used on this site lists Ar-Rahman as Medinan, while many scholars and printed copies classify it as Meccan. Both views are found in the classical literature.

A narration describing Ar-Rahman as “the bride of the Quran” is widely quoted, but hadith scholars consider its chain weak.
