About Surah An-Nasr

An-Nasr, “The Divine Support”, is a three-verse surah from the final period of the Prophet’s life. It speaks of the coming of God’s help and victory, of people entering God’s religion in crowds, and tells the Prophet to respond not with celebration but by glorifying his Lord with praise and asking His forgiveness.

The three verses

  • Help and victory (110:1): when God’s support and the opening (al-fath) come — most commentators understand this as the conquest of Mecca.
  • Crowds embrace Islam (110:2): people entering the religion in groups, as whole tribes did after Mecca opened.
  • The response (110:3): glorify your Lord with praise and seek His forgiveness; He is always ready to accept repentance.

A sign of farewell

Sahih al-Bukhari relates that Umar asked senior companions about this surah. Most explained it as a command to praise God when victory comes, but the young Ibn Abbas said it signalled that the Prophet’s mission was complete and his death was near, and Umar agreed. Sahih Muslim reports Ibn Abbas saying it was the last complete surah to be revealed.

Acting on the surah

According to Aisha, in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet in his last period often said in bowing and prostration words glorifying and praising God and asking His forgiveness, explaining that he was following the Quran. The lesson commentators draw: success should bring humility and gratitude, not pride.

The dataset used on this site lists it as Medinan, the accepted view; some reports place its revelation during the Farewell Pilgrimage.
