About Surah Al-Kafirun

Al-Kafirun, “The Disbelievers”, is a firm, calm declaration that the Prophet would not share his worship with idols. Addressed to those who rejected his message in Mecca, it states in balanced, repeated lines that he does not worship what they worship and they do not worship what he worships, ending with a clear separation: you have your religion, and I have mine.

Structure

  • The address (109:1): the Prophet is told to say, “O disbelievers”.
  • Four balanced statements (109:2–5): neither side worships what the other worships. Commentators explain the repetition as covering both present and future, or as emphasis that closes the door to any bargain.
  • The conclusion (109:6): a clear separation between their religion and his.

Occasion of revelation

Classical commentators report that leaders of Quraysh proposed a compromise: the Prophet would worship their gods for a time, and they would worship God for a time. The surah was the answer. It does not call for hostility; it draws a clear line in matters of worship, and the final verse is often cited as a statement that faith cannot be forced or blended.

When it is recited

  • In the two units of the sunnah prayer before Fajr, together with Al-Ikhlas, according to Sahih Muslim.
  • In the two units of prayer after circling the Kaaba, as described in the account of the Prophet’s pilgrimage in Sahih Muslim.
  • In the witr prayer, after Al-A'la, according to reports in the Sunan collections.
  • Before sleep: Abu Dawud and at-Tirmidhi report the Prophet describing it as a disavowal of associating partners with God.
