About Surah At-Taghabun
At-Taghabun, “Mutual Loss and Gain” (also rendered “The Mutual Disillusion”), takes its name from a description of the Day of Judgement as the day when it becomes clear who has truly gained and who has lost. The surah moves from God’s creation and knowledge to the fate of past nations, then counsels believers on hardship, family, wealth and generosity.
Main themes
- Creator and Knower (64:1–4): He created people, some believing and some not; He shaped them well and knows what they hide and what they show.
- Past nations and resurrection (64:5–7): earlier peoples rejected messengers because they were human; those who deny resurrection are told that they will certainly be raised and informed of their deeds.
- The Day of taghabun (64:9–10): on the Day of Gathering, the true winners and losers become manifest.
- Hardship by God’s leave (64:11–13): no calamity strikes except by His permission, and whoever believes, God guides his heart.
Family, wealth and effort
64:14–15 make the frank point that some spouses and children can become a hindrance to a person’s faith, and that wealth and children are a test — yet they urge pardon and forgiveness rather than harshness. 64:16 gives a principle quoted very often: fear God as much as you are able, listen, obey and spend, for whoever is saved from his own greed is successful. The surah closes by promising that a goodly loan to God will be multiplied (64:17–18).
Classification
The dataset used here lists At-Taghabun as Medinan, which is the view of most scholars; some earlier authorities held it to be Meccan, and others that only its closing verses were revealed in Medina. It is the last of the musabbihat, the surahs that open with God’s glorification.
