About Surah At-Talaq

At-Talaq, “Divorce”, is a Medinan surah that sets out how divorce should be carried out: at the right time, with the waiting period counted, without evicting the wife from her home, and with fair maintenance. Woven through the legal details are some of the Quran’s most quoted promises — that God makes a way out for those who are mindful of Him and provides for them from where they never expected.

The rules of divorce

  • Timing and the home (65:1): divorce is to be given with regard to the waiting period (’iddah), which must be counted; women are not to be put out of their homes during it unless guilty of clear indecency. These are the limits of God, and “perhaps God will bring about some new situation”. Hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim about Abdullah ibn Umar, who divorced his wife during menstruation, show how this verse was applied.
  • Honourable parting (65:2): at the end of the term, either keep the marriage on good terms or part on good terms, with two just witnesses.
  • Waiting periods (65:4): three months for women who no longer menstruate or have not yet done so, and until delivery for pregnant women.
  • Housing and maintenance (65:6–7): house them according to your means, do not harm them, provide for them if pregnant, pay for nursing, and spend according to what God has given you.

Promises to the mindful

In the middle of these rulings, 65:2–3 promise that whoever is mindful of God, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect, and that God is enough for whoever relies on Him. 65:4–5 add that God makes matters easy for the mindful and removes their misdeeds. The surah closes with a warning drawn from towns that defied their Lord, and with God’s creation of seven heavens and of the earth their like (65:12).

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud is reported to have referred to this surah as the “shorter Surah of Women”, a reference to Surah An-Nisa (4).

65:1O Prophet, when you [Muslims] divorce women, divorce them for [the commencement of] their waiting period and keep count of the waiting period, and fear Allah, your Lord. Do not turn them out of their [husbands'] houses, nor should they [themselves] leave [during that period] unless they are committing a clear immorality. And those are the limits [set by] Allah. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah has certainly wronged himself. You know not; perhaps Allah will bring about after that a [different] matter

    65:2And when they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or part with them according to acceptable terms. 5.
